Good morning Balboa Students,

This is the first Scholarship Bulletin of the 2010-2011 academic year. I suggest that you review the applications as soon as possible, even if the deadline is months away. Often times scholarships require recommendation letters and your teachers/counselors will need at LEAST two weeks notice to write those letters.

I want to emphasize that the scholarships listed on the Bulletin are not the only scholarships available; they are just the ones that have sent information to Balboa. While most of the scholarships are for seniors, there are a handful that are open to other grade levels. You can get a more comprehensive list of scholarships which you qualify for if you complete a search using one of the scholarship search engines. I have included the link to two of the more populr sites. I urge you to be cautious while searching and applying for scholarships. You should NEVER have to pay a fee for a scholarship or provide credit card information. If the scholarship requires you to submit your parents'/guardians' tax returns, white out their social security numbers and make a copy to send in.

Balboa receives information on two types of scholarships: ones that are open for all who qualify and ones that allow Balboa to nominate a limited number of applicants from the entire pool of qualified candidates (in bold on the BUlletin). For those scholarships where the school can only nominate a small number of students, I will require that you (1) have a completed List of High School Activities on file with me [attached to this e-mail] and (2) e-mail me the name of the specific scholarship you wish to be considered for. I will convene with the counselors and/or administrators to determine the nominees from our school.

Thanks to Mr. Rosenberg's suggestion, I will try to create a Facebook page to send out updates for scholarships. That's still a work in progress.

Feel free to ask me any questions around school, in my office in room 100, or by e-mail. Good luck!

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to pass along information about a new class you or your high school friends could take on SATURDAYS from 10-2pm (and you'll receive Elective Class credit)! The course focuses on LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer or Questioning) issues through literature, history, film, etc!

Want to know more? Keep reading!

************************************************************************************
We are pleased to announce that the course will meet on SATURDAYS, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, beginning January 23 and continuing through May 29, not counting April 2, which is spring break.

The first class will be held at the SFUSD office building at 750 - 25th Avenue, between Cabrillo Street and Balboa Street in the Richmond District. (We are still negotiating for a more central location for subsequent class meetings.)

PLEASE EMAIL BACK TO:
petehammer0@gmail.com

to let him know if you will be attending the class. More than 30 students from almost every public high school in San Francisco have expressed interest in the course. They know that not everyone will be able to attend on Saturdays (they chose the time based on the results from the online survey), but they anticipate a great turnout.

Please continue to pass the word among your friends. Registration is still open; tell any interested students to email me if they would like to join the class. After they know exactly who is attending the class they will work with the counselors at each school to complete the registration process.
